Mattress firmness and back pain

When single beds are too firm or too soft it results in the heavier part of your body not being in the correct position during sleep. At its most basic it causes back pain like this. 

•  Mattress too firm - A mattress should have the ability to keep your spine in a neutral position during sleep. When it is too firm heavier parts will be too high and the spine will bend sideways, not a natural position. 
• Mattress too soft - The exact opposite to the above but with the same consequences. In this case the spine bows upwards as the heavier parts sink too much.

In both cases the pain is caused by two occurrences, stress to the skeletal system and stress on the muscles. So while your body hangs out of line it adds pressure to vertebra and cartilage which could cause discomfort. The muscles also have to work overtime trying to pull your spine into alignment. This causes morning lower back stiffness.
