In our experience, foam single beds are better for heavy people irrespective if you are a side sleeper or back sleeper. This is because of a few factors.

• No internal bending. In spring mattresses on single beds are subject to heavier weights the springs can compress and border wires can collapse.
• Minimum movement transfer. Because a full foam unit does not transfer movement it is less likely to fail because of its stability. Movement = wear and tear.
• Less chance of cavitation on sleep surface. Because the foam layers "bounce back" and don't get compressed like spring. This helps ease back pain.

Although our recommendation is foam, all of our other heavy weight single beds have the relevant internal support structures specifically designed for the weight tolerance in the mattress.
